Natural Headache Remedies – How to Get Instant Headache Relief?

Did you know that chronic headaches affect 12% of the American population and cost us the incredible amount of one billion dollars a year in medical expenses?

So, if you are suffering from a headache, you are definitely not alone, and that’s why most people need, at some point, to know what natural headache remedies are available.

Whether it is mild or severe, more than 40 million American experience headache at least once in a period of three months. Headache is known as the most common health issue that affects people.

There are many things that can cause a headache, including:

  • Blood vessels constriction
  • Genetics
  • Excessive smoking or drinking
  • Lack of water
  • Oversleeping
  • Allergies
  • Medication overuse
  • Abnormal neuron activity

…and many, many others.

This being the case, we often opt for over-the-counter medicines and painkillers to get headache relief. What we are not aware of is that there are many natural headache remedies that can achieve the same results as these painkillers.

Sometimes even better.

Simple Headache Remedies

Taking medications can often relieve the pain, but is it really good to take them on a regular basis?

It certainly is not, especially if you are suffering from chronic headaches like me.

I was so tired of poisoning myself with painkillers to relieve headache symptoms, so I decided to opt for a better solution.

Take a look at my list of most effective headache home remedies.

Massage has only provided me with temporary relief, but this still works great for me while I wait for pills to take effect.

Temple Massage for Headache
Massage your temples to reduce headache and get some relief

If you are suffering from an excruciating pain in your head, try rubbing the temples.

You can even get a back, head, neck or shoulder professional massage once in a while for optimal results.

Also, you can use massage to lower the headaches frequency.

There are studies that actually show that people who have migraines are more likely to reduce the pain frequency when having at least six weekly massage sessions.

Wait, what? Meditation as a headache remedy? This sounded like a sarcastic idea to me.

Why? Because when my head hurts, I find it impossible to do anything, nevertheless relax and meditate.

However, meditation is not something to do WHEN having a headache. It is actually something that can help you avoid it.

Many meditation techniques can be used to quiet the mind from chronic pain distractions.

Cold and Heat

Heat & Cold Wrap as Headache RemedyThis is the most commonly used headache natural remedy. If your neck feels tight and your head hurts, apply heat to the back of your head or wrap your head all around.

When suffering from a pulsating headache, try applying cold pressure on the temples.

If you don’t know what to use, I would suggest these wraps as headache remedy.

One of the most successful home remedies for headache is magnesium. Additionally, it is much safer than the painkillers you use.

People who suffer from migraines, especially chronic ones, often have low magnesium levels. This is why consuming extra doses of magnesium can reduce the frequency of migraine attacks.

You can always use magnesium supplements, but if you want to opt for the natural form, you can always choose:

  • Whole grains
  • Beans
  • Seeds
  • Nuts
  • Broccoli
  • Leafy greens
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee

Essential Oils

Lavender and peppermint essential oil can generate long-lasting, cooling and headache relieving effects on people.

Peppermint oil, for example, can stimulate an increase in blood flow on the forehead.

Lavender oil stabilizes the mood and acts as a sedative.

Both these remedies are considered to be highly effective when it comes to relieving headache symptoms.

Plenty of Water

Dehydration is the most common cause of headaches.

You can actually get a headache relief by simply drinking a couple of cups of cool water!

However, it is still a good idea to drink plenty of water every day in order to keep the body hydrated. This way, you will not only treat headaches but can actually prevent them from happening.

Ginger helps reduce the blood vessels inflammation in the head.

You can consume ginger in many ways, including plain ginger.

I prefer mixing it with lemon juice or boiling ginger powder in water. This way, I can either enjoy a delicious beverage or have a pleasant inhaling treatment to reduce headache.

A headache can be a very uncomfortable and unpleasant experience, especially when one is suffering from chronic headaches such as migraines. And even though medicine is highly advanced at this point, constantly taking painkillers simply cannot be a good thing.

If you are suffering from headaches, it is time that you do something about it. Headache treatments do not only include home remedies for headache relief, but also things you can do to prevent future pain.
