Best Remedies for Itchy Skin
Scratching the skin gives a momentary relief, no doubt about that. But there are so many times that I have injured and infected my skin for scratching, that I cannot even keep count of.
This must have happened to you too. Even for something as dull as a mosquito bite.
If you are wondering how to get rid of itchy skin, here is what you should start with.
1. Baking Soda
Baking soda is probably the most common way to relieve itchy skin. This is because of its anti-inflammatory properties and their soothing effect.
Soaking in baking soda bath for a duration of half an hour can do all the difference in the world. Use a single cup of it in a tub of warm water and soak the itching away!
2. Lemon Juice
Apply lemon juice directly to the itchy skin to stop the itching symptoms. This method may sound strange and weird, but lemon juice is actually one of the most effective home remedies for itchy skin.
I was skeptical at first too. But guess what? I took my chances and it actually worked!
Lemon contains acetic and citric acids with anti-inflammatory properties. That’s the reason behind its secret power.
3. Cool Water
The cold and itching sensations move along the exact same nerve fibers. So, if you are looking for an instant itching relief, cool water is your best remedy.
Luckily for us, we can use cool water in many ways. You could take a cool shower, apply cold compress or rub an ice cube wrapped in cloth onto the skin.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar can help stop the skin from itching because of its antiseptic, antibacterial and anti-fungal properties.
You could always apply it with a cotton ball. However, I prefer adding some to my warm bath. One more reason to spend half an hour in a tub of warm water!
5. Juniper Berries and Cloves
This combination is an amazing home remedy for itchy skin! Juniper berries actually have anti-inflammatory properties, which combined with the cloves that contain essential oil present the best way to fight the itching.
The mixture should contain unsalted butter, beeswax, juniper berries and ground cloves. Apply it when it’s cool and leave it overnight. It will help you sleep itchy-free!
You could do this every day until your skin gets better.
Oatmeal and water are good ways to relieve itching. I usually use this spread on my irritated areas to get that cooling and soothing sensation.
You could also add colloidal oatmeal to a bath, if you want. Just make sure the water is not too hot. This will only make the skin more irritated.
7. Essential Oils
Essential oils are a great way to relieve itchy skin and there are so many of them! Luckily, you can use them both in your bath or apply them directly to the itchy area.
I consider the following to be the best essential oil for this purpose: Bay leaf oil, Basil oil, Chamomile oil, Lavender oil, Peppermint oil, Rosemary oil and Thyme oil.
8. Coconut Milk and Oil
Coconut milk helps reduce the dryness of the skin, but can also help you with blemishes and dark spots.
Also, an overnight treatment of the itchy areas with coconut milk can really help you get trough the night without scratching.
Put a layer of coconut oil onto the itching areas and go to bed. This way you can enjoy a restful night and even more itchy-free day after.
