Having a persistent cough is never a fun situation. Luckily for you, there are plenty of good home remedies for cough that can help you get rid of that annoying coughing.

Cough is one of the main symptoms of viruses and flu’s, so it’s no wonder that we’ve all experienced it at a certain point. I especially hate being the person in a room that coughs and hacks all the time.

Honey

Why? Because the bees give honey a powerful enzyme when they harvest it, so we can enjoy the antibacterial properties of this miraculous element.

One tablespoon of honey a couple of times a day is all you need for your cough. If you find cough to be disrupting your sleep, you can take it immediately before you go to bed.

Salt

Salt water is a popular home remedy for sore throat.

How does this work? When you add salt water, it becomes more present outside of the mucous membranes cells and this allows water to balance everything out.

As soon as the water leaves the infected cells, you can expect the swelling to go away. Additionally, salt is used to dislodge phlegm and help you get rid of it more easily.

What you need to do here is stir some salt into water until it is dissolved and gargle it. Do this for about 15 seconds and spit. Rinse with water only afterwards.

Steam

Steam is my absolute favorite home remedy for cough, cold and congestion. I have to say, I even wonder how underrated this remedy really is.

The steam can help loosen the phlegm and the mucous, almost immediately. Additionally, you can add some essential oils to even achieve more heath benefits.

The essential oils have anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-viral properties that can lead to wonderful results on your health in general, too.

Licorice Root Tea

Of course there is a tea! This is a cough remedy article, isn’t it?

Why choose licorice root tea? Because licorice root is demulcent and expectorant, which can result in soothing airways and loosening mucous. Additionally, it can provide you with inflammation relief.

Thyme Tea

Thyme has been used as a cough remedy for centuries now, even during the Black Death plague. Interesting, isn’t it?

In the past, people burned bundles of this remedy in order to ward off the plague. You don’t need to do this. It is true that thyme have anti-microbial properties, but you are still fighting a cough, not a plague.

What you can do is mix some fresh or dried thyme with water, honey and lemon. Consume this healthy beverage 2-3 times a day.

Pepper

Being the world’s most traded spice, it is no wonder that pepper has so many secret powers. What people rarely know is that when combined with honey, pepper can become a great home remedy for cough.

Mix the honey and the pepper in some boiling water. Steep for about 10 minutes and drink it. You could repeat this several times a day if you need to loosen the mucous.

Ginger Peppermint Cough Syrup

Making your own ginger peppermint cough syrup is one of the most effective natural remedies for cough. This mixture contains all the soothing qualities that will help you loosen and expel the mucous.

Additionally, the expectorant properties of the ginger can stop the tickling sensation in your throat, especially in cases of dry cough.

How to make this syrup?

Chop 3 tablespoons of ginger. Add the ginger and 1 tablespoon of dried peppermint to 4 cups of water. Boil this mixture and simmer it until it is reduced by half. After it cools down, stir in a cup of honey and wait for it to dissolve.

This syrup can be taken every few hours, in a dosage of 1 tablespoon. Keep it in the fridge.


Cough is not a serious disease, but simply a symptom. And even though it can easily be handled with antibiotics and over-the-counter medications, you should always try out natural cough remedies first.
