Hemorrhoids Prevention – The Do’s and Don’ts for Hemorrhoids

Every health condition is easier to prevent than to treat. However, we still somehow manage do ignore this fact, and start reacting to uncomfortable conditions only after they develop.

This is also the case of hemorrhoids. There are plenty hemorrhoids prevention strategies that we are either not yet aware of, or simply do not include in our lifestyle.

Hemorrhoids (or piles) are one of the most uncomfortable and embarrassing health conditions ever. So, you should really start considering hemorrhoid prevention rather than focusing on its treatment after the piles appear.

These piles occur when the blood vessels around the anus are inflamed. In general, the most effective hemorrhoids prevention methods depend on the reason why they appeared in the first place.

This is the exact reason why I decided to do a do’s and don’ts list of what you should do in order to prevent hemorrhoids from developing. The list below is based on the most common known causes of hemorrhoids.

Do’s

1. Eat a diet high in fiber content

Fresh fruits and vegetables are rich in fibers and can help you prevent hemorrhoids. Maintaining your digestion to a healthy level is also a good remedy for diarrhea and even constipation.

Consuming more fiber will improve the bowel movement and absorb the stool water, by making it become softer.

This in result, will prevent the blood vessels that surround the anus from becoming inflamed, which serves as an amazing hemorrhoids prevention strategy.

There are many foods that are high in fiber, including:

  • Broccoli
  • Flax seed
  • Brown rice
  • Pears
  • Figs

2. Lose some weight

If you are overweight, the pressure in the anal and pelvic area is enhanced. This means that you should  try to have daily exercise and eat more healthy, in order to reduce the extra weight in your body.

3. Exercise regularly

This hemorrhoid preventive method is not only the answer if you are overweight. Physical activity is always beneficial both in terms of hemorrhoids prevention and for your overall health.

Try to exercise for half an hour every day, like I said above. This will help your digestion system to work more smoothly and make you feel better about yourself at the same time.

4. Take occasional hot baths

Hot baths will help soften your stool and moisturize the area that is commonly affected by hemorrhoids. If you are often suffering from this health condition, make sure to take hot baths once a week.

Adding essential oils in the bath can also help.

5. Drink plenty of water

Hydrating your body is your best prevention against hemorrhoids. The digestion process is highly dependent on how much water you consume during the day.

Consuming more water will help speed up the digestion process.

6. Try the squatting position

When you sit on the toilet, that’s not a natural position, and certainly it is not ideal for hemorrhoids.

You could put your feet on a step-stool in front of you when you sit, that will help assume a more natural squatting position.

I have one of those step stools, I bought it from Amazon. 

Remember, squatty potty is best!

Don’ts

1. Do not wipe with dry toilet paper

Try to use wet wipes instead. If you wipe with dry toilet paper, and do this vigorously, your skin is more likely to become irritated and inflamed. The result can be, of course, hemorrhoids.

2. Do not restrain from going to the toilet

Restraining when you feel an urge to go to the toilet is never a good idea, especially if you often suffer from constipation and hemorrhoids. If you wait and delay using the bathroom, the risk of hardening the stool increases.

As a result, your bowel movements become painful and the hemorrhoids can often develop.

3. Do not eat too much red meat

Red meat can cause constipation and increase the chances of developing hemorrhoids. This is the case with fats, too.

4. Avoid lifting heavy objects

Heavy objects are often the cause of hemorrhoids. If you want to prevent the piles from appearing, try to avoid lifting and holding objects that are heavy.

5. Avoid prolonged sitting

Perhaps you’ve heard that if you are spending too much time on the toilet every time, the veins in the anal area start swelling up and hemorrhoids are very likely to develop.

Any time you sit for prolonged times actually, not only on the toilet. If you are sitting down for long periods of time, you are more prone to developing hemorrhoids.

 

When you have to deal with hemorrhoids, there’s no doubt: you wish you could have avoided them, with all the trouble they caused to you. But, at least, there are quite a few things you can do to prevent piles.

Things that you can apply to your lifestyle, and that will help you lowers the risks.
