Nothing can ruin the mood like a headache, regardless of its type. However, if you learn what causes your headache, you may be able to avoid it altogether.
There are many ways to treat a headache, but why not prevent it from happening instead? Headaches prevention can save you from the pain, and allow you to spend your day stress-free.
Headaches Prevention – Here’s a Few Ways
Sometimes, even the most effective known medications, or headache home remedies, cannot help us relieve the pain. This is why headaches prevention is the best way to take care of our health, especially if the pain is chronic.
Prevention methods are usually based on the cause of your pain. I have found some of the most common ways to prevent headaches that can help you avoid the numbing pain.
Watch What You Eat
Unhealthy nutrition can easily cause a headache, especially when it comes to pickled, aged, dried or smoked ingredients.
If you are suffering from headaches, keeping an eating diary may be a good idea.
How does this work?
- Every time you have a headache, write down what you ate in your last meal(s).
- After a while, your diary will show you what foods caused your headaches
- Start working on your headaches prevention, by avoiding those foods in the future.
Adjust Your Sleeping Habits
Getting up at the same time every day is one of the best headache prevention strategies.
I found this really strange at the beginning, but it is actually true. If you get up at the same time every day of the week, and then sleep longer on weekends, you are more prone to develop a headache.
Apparently, getting up the same time every day of the week keeps the circadian rhythms intact and consistent.
Try to get up at the same time. If you find this difficult, you can give yourself an additional hour, but no more than that.
Stress is all around us: at work, at home and everywhere we go. Even our closest relationships can cause us to feel overwhelmed. When this happens, we get anxious and it may result in tension headaches.
A nice bubble bath with essential oils is my personal favorite. My friend finds it relaxing when she exercises.
So, this is actually up to you.
There is a nice, effective headaches prevention strategy that you can try out in the moment that you feel overwhelmed.
Try to breathe in, to a count of five, hold the breath, and exhale after a couple of seconds.
Avoid Caffeine, Alcohol, and Tobacco
Aside from being bad for your health on every level, these three can also be the cause of frequent headaches.
If one or more of these three substances are included in your everyday life, throw them away! Chances are this is exactly what causes that irritating pain in your head.
Caffeine is a known diuretic, which means it will dehydrate you. Hydration is an important part of headaches prevention. This is why it is our next prevention tip.
Drink More Water
Water is the most important thing we must consume. Sure, you are tired of reading how you should drink more water, but there is a reason for all this.
Aside from many other problems, insufficient hydration is a known cause of headaches.
Focus on drinking plenty of water every day. This may be one of the easiest and best ways to prevent headaches..
Headache Prevention Supplements
There are certain things you can consume in order to prevent headaches.
- Ginger and Feverfew mixture: feverfew is a known migraine remedy, while ginger is a nausea remedy.
A combination of the two can give you headache relief and help you reduce the pain.
- Magnesium: consume a daily dose of magnesium to reduce the headache frequency. Magnesium is a known remedy for stress, which is the most common cause of headaches.
Additionally, there are studies that showed how people who suffer from migraines had a deficiency in magnesium.
- Vitamin B2: vitamin B2, or the riboflavin, boosts the energy production in the nerve cells. When there is not enough energy in the body, the result is often a headache.
- Vitamin D: you may have heard that the sun is good for avoiding headaches. Well, the reason for this is the vitamin D. Therefore, if you have vitamin D deficiency, you are more prone to having headaches.
A dosage of 2000mg a day is recommended for most people.
Headaches and migraines are annoying, disturbing and can be really life-altering if chronic. The fact is, it is always better to prevent them than to treat them after they occur.
So, try to fight headaches before they hit you, and ruin your day and your mood at the same time.
