Acid Reflux Symptoms – How to Know If You Are Suffering from Acid Reflux?

The thing with symptoms is, they can always mean several things. It is the time that we finally determine the reason behind these symptoms.

You may find the name concerning at first, but don’t worry, acid reflux has nothing to do with the heart.

As with any other condition, some symptoms are more serious than others. Contact the doctor immediately if you have any alarming signs of acid reflux such as:

  • Black or maroon-colored stool
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Wheezing and dry cough
  • Chronic sore throat
  • Uncontrollable hiccups
  • Long-lasting nausea

Of course, all the symptoms listed can also be cause for other diseases besides acid reflux, but you should visit the doctor anyways.

When Do Acid Reflux Symptoms Occur?

Acid Reflux symptoms can occur at any time, depending on the severity of the condition. However, the most common times when this happens are:

  • After eating a heavy meal
  • When lifting something or bending over
  • When lying down on your back
  • At nighttime

This clears up everything, doesn’t it?

After eating a heavy meal, the acid in the body is increased and therefore, the symptoms are more likely to occur.

Also, nighttime GERD is known to cause most of the pain.

Foods That Can Worsen Acid Reflux Symptoms

There are certain foods that can make all these symptoms even worse. If you are experiencing any of the above-mentioned symptoms, try to avoid:

  • Garlic and onion
  • Peppermint
  • Tomatoes
  • Citrus fruits
  • Chocolate (yup, chocolate too)
  • Caffeine and alcohol
  • Spicy and fatty foods

Don’t be too alarmed. The level of pain rarely indicates the degree of esophagus damage.

This all sounds so scary, but acid reflux is actually rarely serious. And an extremely common one, too.

However, you should never ignore any symptoms you may feel. After all, in most cases, this can actually be solved with simple acid reflux remedies and changes in lifestyle.
