The names of the enzymes may not be relevant to you, but the effects they have on acid reflux most definitely should. Pepsin is actually most effective in environments that are highly acid, like your stomach and of course, mine.

Adding these two to your diet should help alleviate the acid reflux symptoms.

Iodized Salt

Despite what everyone tells us about how disastrous salt is to our body, sometimes this is not true.

I don’t mean that you should stop listening to people and start using salt excessively. If your mother fights with you about it, she is right.

However, if you are suffering from acid reflux, a sprinkle of salt on those veggies may not be such a bad idea.

Acid reflux is often associated with low iodine levels. So, if you use iodized salt in your diet, switch to regular salt instead.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

The reactions to this diet addition vary greatly, so make sure you start with low dosages and see how it works for you.

If you are unable to handle these acids, you can always choose the alternative of fish oil. This option works really well on boosting the immunity.


Oatmeal should become your favorite breakfast dish if you have acid reflux problems. It is filling and does not cause reflux symptoms.

Additionally, the oatmeal absorbs acidity.


Not only it is a great snack, but is also amazing for people with acid reflux.

It also has a high percentage of success in acid reflux cases. According to some studies, only 1% of all people who’ve added it to their diet said it did not work for them.


Fennel is actually known to improve the stomach function.

This unique-tasted crunchy vegetable has a mild licorice flavor.

You can slice it thin and make a healthy salad with it. I love it in combination with arugula and baby spinach. It should also taste great in chicken dishes.

Don’ts – Foods to Avoid in Your Acid Reflux Diet

This list can also vary from person to person, so I focused on some general advice on reducing GERD symptoms.

Spicy Food

No Spicy FoodI really enjoy eating spicy food, so it was extremely difficult for me to try this advice.

When I did, I realized that most of my heartburn was a result of my love for spicy.

Sad, isn’t it?

Hot spices can irritate the esophagus and cause you even more severe heartburn. Avoid these to prevent symptoms from occurring and reduce the ulceration risk.

High Fat Foods

Foods that are high in fat, especially those with trans fats, can cause acid reflux symptoms. This happens because it is hard for the acid to digest them.


Another hard one, I know.

The truth is, chocolate contains chemicals that stimulate the acid release and cause acid reflux symptoms. Additionally, it relaxes the muscle sphincter between the esophagus and the stomach.

If you are suffering from GERD, chocolate is your enemy and shouldn’t be part of your acid reflux diet.


Even though for me it was spicy food, for the majority of acid reflux patients it is alcohol.

Alcohol is not good for your health in general, but can also really harm your stomach lining. It is the most reported cause of heartburn.

Suffering from acid reflux symptoms can be very uncomfortable and rather painful. You should definitely try and find the best treatment for your heartburn, but following a proper diet for acid reflux to your to-do list is also a must.
